Tech vet trades Thunderbolt for iPhone: 'driving me crazy'

A symbolic break in an editorial Monday illustrated a possible backlash against Android. Veteran PhoneDog author Taylor Martin gave up an HTC Thunderbolt for an iPhone 4 after using the Android phone for four months. The Thunderbolt had been "driving me crazy" for three of those months, he said, and it was "time for a break." Poor battery life couldn't be helped by software, Sense was "bug-ridden" and to blame for many issues, and especially a reduced app selection were to blame....

A script to automatically open a Terminal window to its directory

How many times have you been to a folder in Finder and needed a Terminal window open to that folder? For me, the answer was many. So, I wrote little AppleScript to take care of it automatically.

This script works by opening a Terminal window and cd'ing into the directory the script was in. Just copy the script into every folder you want to use if from; it's got a tiny footprint. Here's the code:

set myPath to (do shell script "dirname " & quoted form of (POSIX path of (path to me) as string)) as string tell application "Terminal" activate do script ("cd " & quoted form of myPath) end tell
Paste this into AppleScript Editor and save it as an application. Copy it into each folder you'll want to use it with.

I recommend naming it something like " Terminal" (the space in f ...

New Apple Print Ad Touts iPhone's Business Savvy

As enterprise stalwart RIM falters, Apple is stepping up its targeting of business users with this ad on the back page of The Economist, a very influential business magazine. The ad notes several business apps, including Bloomberg, The Economist, Oracle Business Indicators, and iWork; and ends with the tagline:
iPhone loves business. With over 425,000 apps, the best phone for apps just keeps getting better.
In Apple's Q2 2011 earnings call, COO Tim Cook noted that 88% of Fortune 500 companies are deploying or testing the iPhone, with 75% doing the same for the iPad. Apple also has an extensive iPhone in business page, including case studies and information on how the iPhone can integrate into a company's existing IT infrastructure.

Thanks Tim!

iPad 2 shipping times all under one week

All of you who have been waiting since March to buy an iPad 2 can now pull out your credit card and make your order. For the first time since the wildly successful tablet began shipping, supply is meeting demand, and shipping times are now under one week.

During the first month of sales, shipping times for the iPad 2 were often in the 4 to 5 week range. A quick tour of the major online Apple Stores for most of the countries in the world showed the same 3 to 5 day shipping times.

Improvements in prime contractor Foxconn's ability to build the difficult-to-make device are part of the reason, but Digitimes might have another answer. The electronics manufacturing website thinks that the long shipping times may have caused some would-be buyers to switch to other tablets, claiming in an article yesterday that the iPad 2's market share in Taiwan dropped to 50% due to supply shortages. That is, of course, just one small market -- and not a representative sampling of the worldwide market for tablets.

Foxconn now says that they'll be delivering between 14 to 15 million iPad 2 units to Apple over the next three months, which should make for easy availability both through Apple Stores and secondary channels.
